The British Normandy Memorial was officially opened on Sunday 6 June, 77 years to the day from the D-Day landings and Totnes based company Carpenter Oak were honoured to play a part in its construction.
Carpenter Oak specialise in creating unique timber structures and worked with the Normandy Memorial Trust to design, handcraft and erect the pergola structure that covers the impressive stone columns, engraved with the names of over 22,000 Allied Forces personnel who lost their lives. They also made a number of bespoke benches, offering visitors a place to sit and reflect whilst overlooking the vast Gold Beach in Ver-Sur-Mer.
Adam Milton, Founding Director at Carpenter Oak managed the project. He said: “It was an honour to work with the engineers and architects and bring our expertise in oak to help them achieve their vision and create this historical landmark. This is one of those projects I’m immensely proud to have been involved in – a place to take the grandchildren one day.”
