Jockey Saffie Osborne out for the rest of the year after ‘complications arise from injury’

RISING star Saffie Osborne is set to miss the remainder of the year after complications arose from an old injury.

The talented young jockey suffered a broken arm and a punctured lung in a horror fall at Windsor last October.

She underwent surgery and had several metal plates inserted in her arm to aid the healing process.

But the metal plates have recently started causing nerve issues in her hands.

Osborne, who is the daughter of trainer and former jockey Jamie, revealed that her hands had started going into spasm whilst she was riding in races.

The 19-year-old will go back under the knife in the coming days to remove the metal plates, which is likely to keep her on the sidelines for around a month.

And she is then planning on heading Down Under for a stint in Australia this winter – Covid permitting – meaning she is unlikely to add to her 40 winners and £400,000 in prize-money this season.

She told the Racing Post: “All the metal from my arm has to come out as it’s causing some nerve issues down to my hand.

“My hand has gone into spasm when I’ve been riding a couple of times and I’ve not been able to use it, so that’s got to be sorted. I should be out for about a month.

“I’m looking to go away for the winter and at the moment I’m trying to get it sorted so I can get to Australia, although it’s proving to be a little difficult.

“I was in Australia the winter before Covid-19 started, I’d love to go back.

“It’s been a good season and I’m grateful to all the people who have supported me.

“It’s been a bit frustrating with the injuries I’ve had but I’m looking forward to next season and trying to improve my riding.”

It’s been an up and down year for Osborne who, despite her success, has also been on the end of some vile social media abuse.
