CHELSEA striker Timo Werner chased a lost dog for more than a mile — only to end up defeated.
Timo, 25, set off after the terrier which was darting around in distress in a park.
Onlooker Vincent Cassidy, 55, said: “The man was obviously a very fit and fast runner but the animal couldn’t be caught.
“I thought the guy looked familiar. Then suddenly I said, ‘That’s Timo Werner’!
“He kept going for over a mile all around the park, but the dog was always just out of reach.”
The dog, called Pickles, was finally caught by wardens at Battersea Park, South West London, last Monday. It had an ID collar and was reunited with its owner.
Werner played in Chelsea’s 3-0 Premier League win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, but drew a blank for Germany in their 2-0 defeat to England in the Euros.
Vincent had a quick chat with Timo after his dog chase and quipped: “You should have been that lively at Wembley!”
But he was full of admiration for the speedy Blues star, who was out with partner Julia Nagler, 23.
He said: “Timo was incredibly gracious, kind and polite, as was his girlfriend.
“It was brilliant of him to try and help. He’s had the best pre-season workout possible.”
