What inspired you to focus on multiple areas of law, rather than specializing in just one?
Life is rarely confined to one category, and neither are legal issues. Many clients come to me with overlapping challenges—personal injury cases that involve bankruptcy concerns, or criminal cases that impact family dynamics. I wanted to be versatile enough to address a range of needs, so I developed my practice to cover several key areas. This approach allows me to provide more comprehensive support to my clients, which I find incredibly fulfilling.
How do you approach building trust with new clients?
Trust begins with listening. When clients feel heard, they’re more likely to open up about the details that truly matter. I also make it a point to be transparent, whether it’s about potential outcomes, fees, or the steps involved in their case. Honesty, even when it involves tough news, goes a long way in building that trust.
What’s a memorable moment in your career that reaffirmed your commitment to law?
Early in my career, I worked with a client who had been wrongfully accused of a serious crime. They felt hopeless, but through thorough investigation and persistence, we were able to clear their name. Seeing the relief and gratitude on their face reminded me why I do this work. Moments like that keep me going.
What role do you think technology plays in modern law?
Technology is a game-changer. Tools like legal research platforms and case management software make processes faster and more efficient, which benefits both attorneys and clients. However, technology should enhance the human connection, not replace it. A good lawyer uses technology to streamline tasks but still prioritizes the personal touch that clients need.
How do you handle emotionally charged cases, such as family disputes or criminal defense?
Emotionally charged cases require a balance of empathy and objectivity. It’s important to acknowledge the client’s feelings while remaining focused on the legal strategy. I make it clear to clients that while I deeply care about their situation, my role is to guide them toward the best outcome with a clear head.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
The most rewarding part is knowing that I’ve made a real difference in someone’s life. Whether it’s helping a small business owner navigate a contract dispute or giving a family closure after a difficult legal battle, those moments of gratitude from clients mean the world to me. They remind me why I chose this profession.
How do you ensure work-life balance in such a demanding field?
I’ve learned that setting boundaries is crucial. I dedicate certain hours to work and protect my personal time for family and hobbies. For instance, I enjoy skiing and farming, which help me decompress. Maintaining balance ensures I can give my best to both my clients and my loved ones.
What advice would you give to clients navigating their first legal issue?
Don’t panic, and don’t rush into decisions without consulting an attorney. The legal system can feel overwhelming, but that’s what we’re here for. Gather as much documentation as you can, be honest about your situation, and trust the process. Most importantly, choose a lawyer you feel comfortable communicating with.
How has your community involvement shaped your career?
My community involvement keeps me connected to the people I serve. Working with youth programs, 4-H, and local churches has shown me the challenges and aspirations of the community. It reminds me that the work I do doesn’t just affect individuals—it has a ripple effect that can impact families and neighborhoods.
What do you hope clients remember about working with you?
I hope they remember that I genuinely cared about their well-being and fought tirelessly on their behalf. I want them to feel that I treated them with respect and empathy while delivering honest, effective legal representation. If they leave feeling supported and valued, I’ve done my job.
