Access to full fibre broadband in the UK is expanding. As more and more network operators lay the foundation for ultrafast fast fibre broadband in areas around the country, homes and businesses are able to connect with packages from various internet providers. All offer what is known as a ‘fibre-to-the-premises’ (FTTP) connection.
This ultrafast fast fibre broadband type of broadband is considered the future of internet connectivity for homes and businesses. Providing a greater service, from faster internet speeds, to more reliable connection, and cost-effective prices. However, while some areas are already up and running others are still awaiting the arrival of the anticipated ultrafast broadband option.
The Rollout of Fibre Optic
Fibre optic is being rolled out around the country thanks to what are known as network operators. Fibre optic network operators are leading the way in building full fibre networks across specific areas of the country. Certain network operators will specialise in specific areas, so it is important to get to know what is available in your area and which ISPs offer full fibre broadband deals on these networks. You may have spotted teams of operator engineers in your area over recent years, installing fibre optic cables.
Government Plans for the Future of Internet Access
The UK government is in full support of the fibre optic rollout, offering funding support for network operators as well as schemes for rural areas. This is known as Project Gigabit.
Project Gigabit – Government funding programme
The project Gigabit funding programme covers two forms of funding in support of the fibre optic rollout. For larger network operators the government supply contracts to help in the deployment of fibre broadband to wider areas of the UK.
Meanwhile, a voucher scheme for rural areas is also available. In these locations, where network operators are yet to focus, these vouchers can be used by local residents in the hopes of working with network operators to bring ultrafast broadband to locations that are typically overlooked. This comes with the intention of including every area of the UK in the digital development of the country.
2024 updates – while the 2019 Conservative manifesto set a goal to bring full-fibre to every household in the UK by 2025, this has since been revised. According to the Levelling Up White Paper, the government is now aiming for a goal of 2030.
How Your Area Will Benefit From Deployment Of Fibre Optic
Once deployed in your area, homes and businesses with the means to connect to fibre optic broadband will enjoy a range of benefits, including:
- Faster internet speeds
- More reliable connectivity
- Cheaper broadband packages
- Less disruptions
- Fewer outages
- Greater streaming and downloading speeds
With the continuation of the rollout, by 2030 it is expected that all households will have access to fibre optic broadband in the UK. Helping to revolutionise the way our homes and businesses connect to the internet. Providing a future-proof broadband service for all, whilst plugging the digital gaps across areas of the country.
