Manchester United are reportedly the frontrunners to sign PSG target Giorgio Scalvini in January. The Red Devils are said to be in “advanced negotiations” with Atalanta over securing the 20-year-old centre-back’s services.
That is according to French publication Les Bons Conceil Du Sports, who claim that Man Utd are prepared to meet Scalvini’s £44million release clause. This news will be a punch in the gut for PSG.
The French giants are searching for a new centre-back following an injury to Milan Skriniar. PSG only recently signed Brazilian centre-back Lucas Beraldo from Sao Paulo for £17.2m.
The 20-year-old was expected to be the reigning Ligue 1 champion’s only defensive reinforcement in the winter transfer window but Les Parisiens’ transfer plans have since changed with Skiniar set to be out until the end of the season.
According to Foot Mercato, Scalvini would be a “dream signing” for PSG Sporting Director Luis Campos but it appears that he is more likely to be playing at Old Trafford next season with the same report claiming they are ‘ahead of everyone’.
Roma’s Gianluca Mancini and Alessandro Buongiorno of Torino are also high up on PSG’s January shortlist while Lille teenage sensation Leny Yoro has also been floated around as a possible alternative.
Man Utd already have an established relationship with Atalanta having signed Rasmus Hojlund from them in the summer for £72m, which will help in negotiations for Scalvini. The Bergamo management is renowned for being tough in business and United will know how to deal with this.
Scalvini has already made 74 first-team appearances for his boyhood club despite only recently turning 20. He is also a seven-cap Italian international and is widely considered to be one of the best young defenders in the world.
