The England forward has endured a torrid season to date, scoring just one goal in 16 games. Rashford’s form is ever more baffling considering he came into this campaign off the back of the best-scoring season of his career. However, the 26-year-old has found himself stuck in a rut which has coincided with a very slow start to the season for Erik ten Hag’s United – although they appear to have turned a corner in recent weeks.
With Euro 2024 just around the corner, Rashford will no doubt be desperate to return to form soon. But Tim Sherwood thinks he has ‘no chance’ of starting for Gareth Southgate’s England team at next year’s Euros and feels that Ten Hag is not getting the best out of him.
The former Tottenham manager is confident Rashford would be able to make the team if he was playing at City rather than United. Asked if he would put him in his starting side for Euro 2024, Sherwood said: “No, not a chance. And he can thank his manager for playing his way out of the England team, unfortunately.
“I think if he was at Man City now he’s got all the attributes to be a world-class player and make the team. I think there’s not going to be a turnaround between now and the end of the season, unfortunately. I think he can thank Ten Hag for that because it’s not been good enough.
“For me, Jack Grealish has to be there, I’ve worked with Jack, I know what he’s like but for Phil Foden not to be in this starting line-up is criminal. Both of these players have to be in the team, we have to build teams around players with abilities like this.”
Rashford’s problems appeared to worsen on Friday when he was forced off with a fitness worry in the second half of England’s 2-0 victory over Malta. Southgate was quick to play down the severity of his problem – which will come as welcome news to United fans and boss Ten Hag, who is already battling an injury crisis.
“I think he (Rashford) is probably okay. We just thought given the nature of the collision it was a chance to get Cole into the game. I haven’t assessed too much but I think he was okay when he came off,” Southgate said.
Rashford could therefore potentially be given another opportunity to impress his boss ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Everton on Sunday when England take on North Macedonia on Monday night.
