David de Gea has published a cryptic social media post as speculation swirls about a sensational return to Manchester United. The Red Devils reportedly hope De Gea will land back at Old Trafford after ending his 11-year stay in the summer amid growing concerns about Andre Onana.
According to The Sun, United are pleading with De Gea to return on a short-term contract ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations in the new year.
Erik ten Hag is said to be worried that he will be short of goalkeepers if Onana decides to represent Cameroon at AFCON following his retirement U-turn.
The report claims United were surprised by Onana’s decision to make up with Rigobert Song and are prepared to turn to De Gea for extra cover.
Onana could miss up to eight games if Cameroon go the distance at AFCON – running from January 13 to February 11.
It was previously believed that the prospect of losing the 27-year-old for such a period inspired Ten Hag’s decision to sign Altay Bayindir in a £4million deal from Fenerbahce.
Bayindir joined Onana and Tom Heaton as the three senior stars in United’s goalkeeper’s union.
However, an astonishing move for De Gea would suggest Ten Hag isn’t convinced by his alternative options.
De Gea hasn’t signed for another club almost three months after leaving Manchester, ending over a decade as United’s No 1.
The Old Trafford giants reportedly offered the Spaniard reduced terms to remain at the club, given Ten Hag planned to recruit a new starting stopper.
But De Gea rejected an offer that would’ve chopped his salary from £375,000 a week to £200,000 a week, causing negotiations to break down.
