Orlando Bloom has spoken out about his controversial threesome scene with Rooney and Kate Mara in their new film, Bucking Fastard.
The premise has raised eyebrows given that the two actors are actual sisters.
Bloom plays Gareth Mulroney, a man who develops a romantic relationship with sisters Joan and Jean Holbrooke, played by The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo actor Rooney, 41, and House of Cards star Kate, 43. In the film, the Holbrooke sisters speak in unison, dress the same and have shared dreams. They also fall in love with the same man.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor discussed filming the ménage à trois scene at the San Sebastián Film Festival in Spain, alongside German writer-director Werner Herzog, saying that it reflects the “carnal desires” of the characters.
Asked about the scene, Bloom said there is “such simplicity to the characters and [their] carnal desires, but also an innocence to the sisters,” according to Variety.
“My character, the Bucking Fastard, is sensitive too. And he’s quite quickly out of his depth in some ways. It was a very sincere sort of moment that was created.”
Bloom also praised the two sisters, who, in the film, are perfectly in sync and finish each other’s sentences.
“It was wonderful to work with these two,” he said. “Seeing them move and breathe and think as if they’re dreaming together was super unique. I don’t think you’ll ever see a movie like this.”
Herzog added: “There are moments when a director has to step back. In the love scene, I said to Orlando: ‘You are in bed, and you have two women in your arms. How you deal with it, I cannot give instructions.’ It is beautiful because it has such charm and depth.”
The film premiered September 3 at the Venice Film Festival, with Rooney, Kate and Bloom walking the red carpet together.

Bloom previously spoke about his experience playing the character at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.
“He’s such a simple guy, I think he just walks into this beautiful ménage à trois,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “This idea of it as like, ‘Okay, well, yeah, this is what we’re doing.’ And I think he’s out of his depth before he knows it… He’s a real guy’s guy in the most simple ways.”
In the film, Bloom’s relationship with the two sisters shifts, and he takes them to court after they damage his property in an act of revenge.
“What I love about Bucking Fastard is that it refuses to judge its characters and offer any kind of easy answers. That is something that Werner focused on,” Bloom added at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
“It was wonderful to work with Kate and Rooney; I’ve been a long admirer of both of them. We had a lot of fun in Dublin. It was a great experience and certainly a bucket-list opportunity to work with someone like Werner and such a phenomenal cast,” he added.
