Marcus Rashford’s story at Manchester United may have reached its final chapter. Having had loan spells at Aston Villa and Barcelona, the 28-year-old forward hasn’t represented the Red Devils since 2024. Most fans and pundits assumed his career at his boyhood club was completely over, but United boss Michael Carrick has given the green light for Rashford to report back to Carrington once his post-World Cup break comes to an end.
The Sun reports that Rashford features on a three-man shortlist for Fenerbahce, alongside AC Milan forward Rafael Leao and Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr. They add that the Englishman’s representatives have been approached by the Turkish side regarding a prospective transfer.
Should a switch for Rashford to the Super Lig materialise, Carrick’s strategy for replacing the England international could centre on Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall. While such a signing may initially appear puzzling, it could prove to be a shrewd move from the United manager.
Patrick Dorgu proved to be a crucial – and adaptable – asset for United last season when available, featuring more frequently in left-midfield and left-wing than in his natural left-back berth. With four goals and four assists to his name in the 25/26 campaign, the Danish international established himself as a genuine option across United’s attacking line.
Matheus Cunha has taken on Rashford’s No. 10 shirt and his position on the left flank, with some suggesting Dorgu’s primary role this coming season will be deputising for the Brazilian. Should that prove to be the case, Carrick will have only Luke Shaw as a realistic left-back option, thereby paving the way for Hall’s arrival, who has emerged as a priority target for United this summer.
The 21-year-old is reportedly viewed as the long-term successor to Shaw, with United said to be weighing up an opening bid of approximately £60m to lure him away from St James’ Park. His exit would represent the fourth significant departure from Newcastle this summer, following Gordon, Sandro Tonali, and manager Eddie Howe.
The England defender embodies both the present and future for United, with his versatility further enhancing his appeal. Throughout his career to date, Hall has made 26 appearances at left midfield, according to Transfermarkt.
While he is eager to establish himself as a regular first-choice left-back, reportedly attributing his World Cup exclusion to Howe’s rotation of him during the latter stages of last season, he will gradually succeed Shaw – now 31 – as United’s primary option.
Carrick will require such squad depth for what he hopes will be a considerably lengthier campaign than the previous one, when United were knocked out of the domestic cup competitions early and had no European football. Should he manage to convince Hall of the long-term project, then he will have numerous tactical options available on the left flank.
