Serving to stay in this first set, the No. 9 seed kicks things off with an unforced error, his 12th of the match already.
The crowd are left gasping in the next point, as Fery retrieves the ball on what looks like it could be a winner for Cobolli. The Brit clips the net, but Cobolli responds with some clever hand skills at the net and it’s 15-15.
At 30-15, Cobolli is about to hit his second serve when a cork pops. It’s not quite the right time! He then hits a let and has to try to serve again.
Finally, the point gets underwat, but Cobolli nets the ball and the fans start cheering as Fery goes within two points of the set.
And the umpire steps in before Cobolli serves again, telling the crowd: “Please enjoy your drinks but wait for the end of the point before opening the bottles, thank you.”
The fans laugh and applaud, but they’re really cheering when the Italian hits a double fault to give Fery set point.
Cobolli misses the first serve again and plays it very safe on the second. But he sends the ball well outside of the lines and Centre Court erupts as Fery takes the first set.
Did that champagne pop throw Cobolli off? Who knows, but the British crowd won’t mind helping out their local lad.
