Netflix announces one of its biggest shows is ending after six seasons

Netflix will be saying au revoir to Emily in Paris — one of the streamer’s most popular shows — with its sixth season, the series’ creator has announced.

The show, which stars Lily Collins as the somewhat insufferable American marketing executive Emily Cooper who goes to work in Paris, will end in Greece and Monaco, where it is hoped that Emily’s existential search for true love will come to an end.

Announcing the news, series creator Darren Star said in a statement to Variety that making the show has been a “trip of a lifetime.”

“As we embark on the final season, I am so grateful to Netflix, Paramount, and, most importantly, the fans who have taken this incredible journey with us. We can’t wait to share this last chapter with you,” he said. “Thank you for letting us be a part of your lives, inspiring your dreams of travel and your love of Paris. We will always have Emily in Paris!”

Collins posted a video to Instagram Thursday, promising fans a thorough farewell in the final chapter of Emily’s European adventures.

“Our entire cast and crew are pouring our hearts into making this a fantastic farewell season, which we’re now filming,” she said. “I can’t wait for all of the magic ahead, and to celebrate our final season with you in the most chic way yet.”

Although the series began in Paris when it launched in 2020, it has become more of a pan-European endeavor in recent seasons, with Emily living between Paris and Rome — and falling in love with various men from those cities.

The latest season wrapped with Emily deciding whether to stay in Rome with her Italian beau Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini) or return to life in Paris.

The finale then showed Emily’s on-again, off-again romantic interest, a Frenchman named Gabriel (Lucas Bravo), sending her a postcard inviting her on a Greek getaway. He revealed at the end of the series that he had left his Paris restaurant and taken a new chef job on a yacht.

It has already been confirmed that key cast members Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount, Samuel Arnold, Bruno Gouery and Andrew Fleming will join Collins for the sixth (and now final) season.

Emily in Paris has continued to be a huge hit for Netflix, despite mixed reviews. The latest season amassed 26.8 million views globally in just 11 days. It also hit the top 10 list in 91 countries.

Upon its launch in 2020, season one was watched by 58 million households in its first 28 days, according to Netflix.

While the show was initially praised for being a binge-worthy feel-good watch, the series has received middling reviews for its most recent seasons, with plenty of critics and viewers citing the repetitive plotlines and frustration with Emily’s meandering life decisions.

In The Independent’s two-star review of the latest season, Katie Rosseinsky pointed out that the show relies on stereotypical tropes to portray Emily’s European love interests.

“[Emily’s] skill for attracting men who seem to embody the national stereotype of any country she visits remains unmatched,” she wrote. “Marcello is a tall, dark and handsome mamma’s boy who works for the family cashmere brand, and whose idea of a grand day out is a truffle hunt in the forest (he and his family are drawn, of course, with all the nuance of the Dolmio puppets).”

She continued: “I look forward to the inevitable future series where Emily romances, say, a bullfighter from Spain, or a Volvo-driving Ikea employee from Sweden named Karl Karlsson.”

Emily in Paris’s ending marks the second Netflix series in the past week to announce its final season. Previously, it was revealed that the upcoming fifth season of The Lincoln Lawyer, the beloved legal drama starring Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, would be the show’s last.

The final season of Emily in Paris is expected to air late 2026.
