Scottie Scheffler has consistently proven why he holds the position of world No.1 golfer and the American’s caddie believes the PGA Tour star is continuing to elevate his game even now. Scheffler recently secured his 20th PGA Tour triumph, with the 29-year-old’s prize money exceeding £73million ($100m) from tournament winnings alone and laying down a marker to Rory McIlroy and the rest of the chasing pack. Ryder Cup winner Scheffler and his caddie Ted Scott have shown they form an hugely successful partnership. Scott initially began working with the New Jersey-born star at the 2021 RSM Classic and the pair have achieved remarkable success since.
Scott said the 20-time PGA Tour winner shows no signs of easing up. “Great players don’t like giving up, you know, anything,” he told PGA Tour Radio. “I mean, I think that’s one of the things that I’ve just never had in me, you know, like, I always say if Scottie Scheffler was playing a nine-year-old girl in ping pong, he would want to beat her 21-0. And then he would apologize afterwards, but while it was going on, he would have no mercy. That’s certainly just the feeling that you get when you compete against him in anything.
“When I first started working for him, he was 19th in the world and he had a white golf bag. You know, no logos on it. He just doesn’t chase records, money, fame. The guy just loves to compete. And because he loves to compete, you know, he wants to be in the mix, he’s super dedicated to preparing for the test.”
Scott has observed a remarkable transformation in Scheffler’s game that ought to concern rivals such as McIlroy. “This offseason, I think they worked real hard on his body and it’s probably the best I’ve seen him look as far as setup,” he added. “You know, like sometimes over the course of the year, swinging one direction, practising a lot, you start to get out of alignment.
“But, you know, watching him on the range, warming up every day. I mean, everything just looks so parallel and symmetrical and, you know, he told me he had a really good off-season.
“So, yeah, you know, it’s fun to watch somebody so driven to just put himself in contention and just to see how hard he works and to get the reward is really neat.”
Scheffler continues his quest for the career grand slam, targeting a triumph at the US Open which would see him join McIlroy, Tiger Woods, and four others in securing his place in major championship folklore.
Scheffler will be in the field at the WM Phoenix Open next week alongside several other leading figures at the People’s Open. McIlroy isn’t involved but there is British interest in the form of Matt Fitzpatrick and Marco Penge, among others.
