It’s intensified talk of the Liverpool hierarchy pulling the plug on Slot’s tenure, not least because Xabi Alonso has become available in recent weeks. Should the Reds opt to get rid of Slot and hire Alonso in his place, Express Sport have picked out some potential signings the ex-Liverpool midfielder could look to bring with him.
One of the big talking points from Alonso’s Real Madrid tenure was his dysfunctional relationship with Vinicius Junior, but on the opposite wing, Alonso appeared to work well with Rodrygo. The Brazil ace has been rumoured with a Los Blancos exit, and Liverpool were among the teams linked in the summer. Real Madrid would likely need a hefty chunk of cash to be tempted into a sale, but perhaps Liverpool decide to spend big on a potential Mohamed Salah replacement.
There aren’t many members of Alonso’s imperious Bayer Leverkusen side still at the German side, but Edmond Tapsoba is yet to join the exodus. He was a regular under Alonso at Leverkusen, and with central defence having been such a troublesome position for Liverpool of late, they could snatch themselves a bargain with Tapsoba. The 26-year-old will have just two years left on his deal by the time the summer rolls around, meaning Leverkusen could be forced into a sale.
Speaking of Bundesliga exports, there have been few with a higher reputation than Angelo Stiller of late. The midfielder has been tipped to join one of Europe’s elite for some time now, with Real Madrid mentioned among potential suitors. Stuttgart will have a job on their hands keeping him beyond the summer, so expect Liverpool to be among those knocking on Stiller’s door when he decides to move on.
And finally, another one of Alonso’s former Real Madrid lieutenants. Camavinga might’ve just seen his Los Blancos career extended by Alonso, given the French international was struggling for minutes prior to his arrival. The two appeared to strike up a strong relationship in the Spanish capital – something that could benefit Liverpool’s hopes of signing him down the line. Camavinga is another Real Madrid player often linked to an exit, and if he is going to depart, a reunion with Alonso in Liverpool could represent a solid opportunity for him.
