Manchester United could be set for a busy January window despite being without a permanent manager. An interim head coach is expected to take over until the end of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believed to be leading the race. The former United striker held talks on Saturday about a sensational return to Old Trafford, having managed the Red Devils previously.
It looks increasingly likely that Solskjaer will be given the reins until the campaign draws to a close. He could oversee a productive January window, with United thought to be eyeing a couple of potential signings. They could also wave goodbye to several players who have been linked with exits, but it remains to be seen how the winter market will play out.
Express Sport looks at five players who could be on the move this January…
Potential signings
Yan Diomande
United are believed to be chasing a blockbuster move for the RB Leipzig winger, who has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s most promising young stars.
Any successful deal won’t come cheap, though, with Leipzig thought to be demanding around £83million in exchange for Diomande’s signature.
United aren’t the only club with an interest in snapping him up. The likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich have also been tipped to test Leipzig’s resolve before the end of the month.
Igor Tyjon
United perhaps have a better chance of landing the Blackburn Rovers striker, who is widely expected to leave Ewood Park before the window closes.
Arsenal have been chasing Tyjon’s signature for over a year and have seen a number of bids rejected, with United now believed to have entered the race.
The teenage striker has rejected a professional contract at Blackburn, giving the Red Devils the opportunity to swoop.
Potential exits
Joshua Zirkzee
The striker has endured a tough campaign and is believed to be angling for a January exit to boost his playing time.
He has been linked with a move to Roma but reports have suggested that United have pulled the plug on talks with the Italian giants. They may decide to keep Zirkzee around in the event of an injury crisis, but it seems clear that he would rather leave.
Kobbie Mainoo
The midfielder’s future remains unclear despite Amorim’s sacking earlier this week. He hasn’t started a Premier League game this season but could be given a new lease of life if Solskjaer is appointed to steady the ship.
He may still prefer to leave in search of regular minutes and a fresh start elsewhere, with his situation likely to become clearer in the coming weeks.
Gabriele Biancheri
United have reportedly given the youngster the green light to leave Old Trafford on loan before the January window slams shut.
Several EFL clubs are reported to have already expressed interest in Biancheri, who has been training with United’s first-team squad this season.
