Steven Gerrard has revealed he would only consider a return to Rangers if he had the proper ‘tools’ and support structure in place. The former Aston Villa boss withdrew from contention to replace Russell Martin in October, despite being the frontrunner for the position following Martin’s dismissal. Gerrard had previously tasted remarkable success at Ibrox, breaking Celtic’s dominance by delivering Rangers’ first Scottish Premiership crown in a decade.
Both sides are believed to have engaged in encouraging discussions regarding the vacancy, yet Gerrard concluded the circumstances weren’t suitable for his return at that juncture. Nevertheless, the Liverpool icon hasn’t ruled out a future homecoming to Glasgow.
Speaking candidly about what it would require for him to accept the role down the line, Gerrard told TNT Sports’ Ally’s Social Club: “I’ve got a special affinity and feeling for Rangers now. I want to help that club – I really do.
“But you have to have the right tools and the right opportunity to help that club, because I know how difficult it is.
“I understand how heavy it is when you put that on your neck and shoulders and you know that more than anyone.
“If I’ve got the right tools and I’m surrounded by the right people, I’ve got confidence in myself that I can make Rangers good again.
“But if I’m not surrounded by the right people and I don’t have the right tools, I’m not a magician, Ally. I’d only take it if it was right.”
Rangers have faced a tough season so far. They currently sit fourth in the Scottish Premiership. nine points adrift of leaders Hearts.
Danny Rohl, who took the Rangers job after Gerrard turned it down, remains optimistic that his side can achieve big things before the end of the campaign.
Speaking earlier this month, he said: “If you can climb in the table and you can close the gaps step by step, then it’s fantastic.
“So far we’ve made a good approach since I’ve been here, now it’s about a big game on the weekend and we are looking forward to this.
“If you’re clinical in both boxes, you have a chance. I see a group who’s growing. Also some individual performances are going better and better, but we know that we still have to improve parts of the game.
“We are not always consistent over 90 minutes in one direction. If we can do this, then we make the next step. I’m really convinced we can do something this season.”
