BBC viewers blown away by Chris Hoy’s wife’s gesture after her own heartbreak

BBC audiences have been left deeply moved by Sarra Hoy following a powerful new documentary offering an intimate glimpse into their lives as the Olympic legend confronts terminal cancer. Chris Hoy: Cancer, Courage and Me made its debut on BBC One on Thursday evening, with the celebrated cyclist candidly discussing his Stage 4 cancer diagnosis and its profound impact on his loved ones, while also revealing how he has channelled his journey to uplift others.

The cycling icon received his devastating diagnosis in 2023, being told he had between two and four years to live after scans revealed that primary prostate cancer had metastasised to his shoulder, pelvis, ribs and spine. In a heartbreaking development, Sarra received her own diagnosis of an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis (MS) shortly following her husband’s terminal prognosis, which the six-time Olympic gold medallist described as “a waking nightmare”.

Nevertheless, the pair have confronted their respective medical challenges with extraordinary resilience, with Sarra standing alongside the Team GB legend in raising millions for charitable causes and prompting a dramatic increase in men seeking cancer screening through relentless advocacy work.

Throughout the documentary, Sarra’s compassion, commitment and strength in managing her own devastating diagnosis was evident, as she described supporting her husband through his cancer battle as “her life’s privilege”.

“The world was so upside down, it was so torpedoed by the news about Chris, that actually my diagnosis was just another moment in time really,” she said of being diagnosed with MS. “I prefer it to be that way, talking about Chris, really.

“[It’s] at no cost to me. It’s just what you do, isn’t it. I feel it’s the greatest privilege of my life to be able to walk along with Chris”.

Later in the programme, she struggled to hold back tears as she continued: “I still maintain that it is my life’s privilege to walk alongside him as he goes through this, and I would not ask for it to be any other way. It’s felt easier than it should be and it’s because we are doing it together.”

Cycling legend Hoy paid tribute to his wife during the documentary, saying: “She never demands the spotlight, it’s never about her – but she deserves it all the way. I can’t imagine having coped with it at all without her, she’s an amazing person.”

The documentary also highlighted the heartfelt gesture Sarra made to help their two children understand what their father was experiencing.

“They knew he was having his medicine,” she explained. “I wanted to make cancer and chemotherapy part of our lives. I didn’t want them to be scared of this, I didn’t want them to ever remember being sat down and told something, I want it to be something that evolves and they grow with it.

“They were scared, they had heard about cancer. Questions come very quickly; Will he die? Will I catch it? Did I cause it? Was it because I was naughty? They didn’t quite verbalise that, but that’s one very common things for children.

“We’ve got a big cherry blossom tree in the garden which we all love and I quickly realized that Chris’s chemo would finish when the cherry tree would be blossoming. We painted a big huge brown tree with no leaves or blossom on it, and bought some lovely bits of pink blossom.

“Every day they would get up and each stick a piece of blossom on the tree, with the idea that we were helping Daddy regrow. I was trying to do it for Chris as much as the children, to help him see that the trees are stripped bare and they’re taken down to nothing, but they regrow.”

The heartfelt moment reduced viewers to tears, with many praising Sarra’s “remarkable” strength and devotion to her husband whilst battling her own health challenges.

One viewer posted on X: “Sir Chris Hoy, an absolute hero on the track, he is an even bigger one off the bike,” adding, “But his wife, Lady Sarra, is a truly remarkable woman.”

Another commented: “Chris Hoy and Sarra Hoy – incredible people,” writing, “In a world, country, space where venom, hatred, prejudice and self interest dominates, they have demonstrated love, peace, selflessness, community and care leads to happiness, especially in adversity. Inspirational barely covers it.”

A third viewer praised: “What an incredible human being Sir Chris Hoy is. A sporting great but perhaps more importantly a wonderful human being. He is lucky to have a fantastic wife in Sarra too.”

Another commented: “Very touched watching the beautiful documentary about Sir Chris and Lady Sarra Hoy. Beautiful to see someone bringing good out of the darkest places in life. I wish them all the best for the journey they are making together.”

Whilst acknowledging the documentary was “at times a tough watch,” another remarked: “Very moving and inspiring. Not only Chris himself, but also his amazing wife, Sarra.”
