Both players were selected in the starting XI for the loss against Everton, with Casemiro withdrawn shortly before the 60-minute mark to make way for Kobbie Mainoo.
Yet it seems the boss’s selection choices within the current formation haven’t won universal approval inside the squad. Dorgu liked a recent Instagram post suggesting that Fernandes and Casemiro are incompatible as midfield partners and shouldn’t feature together.
An upload from the account “mufcunion” featured a screenshot captured from X, which read: “Any coach that sees Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes as a viable pivot is one that isn’t serious.”
The Instagram post carried the caption: “Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro CANNOT play together,” and received approval from Dorgu, who joined the Manchester outfit from Lecce for £25million earlier this year. The wing-back has featured 12 times across all competitions this season, providing one assist during that period.
Fernandes and Casemiro have been a formidable duo for Manchester United this season, starting together in 10 of the club’s 13 matches across all competitions. The only exceptions were during a heavily rotated squad against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup second round, and two Premier League clashes against Brentford and Manchester City.
In those games, Manuel Ugarte was chosen to partner Fernandes in the absence of Casemiro. However, the selection for the Brentford match was enforced due to Casemiro’s suspension following a red card in the previous game against Chelsea.
Casemiro’s future at Old Trafford remains uncertain as his contract nears its expiry date. Despite having a better season than the last, it is still unclear whether the 33-year-old Brazilian will extend his stay with the Red Devils.
This uncertainty led to United being linked with several midfield reinforcements over the summer, including Brighton’s Carlos Baleba. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has also been making headlines recently as a potential target for the January transfer window.
However, such social media activity from Dorgu criticising the boss’ selection decisions does not bode well for the team or Amorim himself.
