John Terry’s net worth, family giving him grief and wife Toni’s transformation

John Terry is a Chelsea icon through and through. He is set to grace the pitch once again for his beloved Blues this weekend as they face off against Liverpool in an eagerly awaited legends match at Stamford Bridge. Terry holds the record as Chelsea‘s most successful captain ever. During his tenure in west London, Terry clinched five Premier League titles, six FA Cups, three League Cups, the Europa League and the Champions League.

The 44-year-old was also a mainstay for England, earning 78 caps for the Three Lions across numerous major tournaments. Although he later ventured into coaching with a spell at Aston Villa, Terry is primarily recognised as one of the greatest defenders of the Premier League era. With the former top-flight star returning to action this weekend, Express Sport delves deeper into the ex-England skipper’s net worth, his wife Toni and his feelings about hailing from a family of West Ham United fans.

John Terry’s net worth

Terry’s net worth is speculated to be between £40-£50million. In 2017, Terry was listed among the top 10 wealthiest footballers globally by Business Insider.

In 2007, Terry became the highest-paid player in the Premier League. The Sunday Times Rich list in 2018 estimated the former defender’s worth at £38.2 million.

However, his three-year coaching stint at Aston Villa from 2018 to 2021 is thought to have boosted his bank balance to a whopping £50m.

Wife’s transformation

Toni Terry wed the former Chelsea skipper in 2007. The mother-of-two has since embraced a quintessentially country-chic style in recent years, a stark contrast to her previous days when she was labelled a ‘WAG’.

Toni is frequently spotted donning tailored tweed blazers, luxurious cashmere jumpers and high-end boots, rather than her former appearance which featured bold ensembles and platinum blonde locks.

The fitness guru was amongst the original spouses and partners who travelled to 2006 World Cup fixtures to cheer on Terry alongside Cheryl Cole, Alex Gerrard, and Coleen Rooney.

Nevertheless, Toni has pursued professional dressage riding since 2010 and this has significantly transformed her public persona. In 2006, she told The Sun: “Everyone else seemed to look amazing, but I hated all the pictures I saw of me.

“Perhaps I should have been easier on myself – I had just had twins, after all – but this was the slightly insane world I lived in and the pressure was immense. That was the trigger for me to change my body forever.”

Getting grief from his family

Terry previously confessed he anticipated a difficult reception from his relatives after propelling Chelsea into the FA Cup’s fifth round, defeating West Ham in the process, back in 2012. It was during the 92nd minute that Terry clinched a 3-2 victory for the Blues.

Speaking afterwards, he revealed how his decisive strike affected his West Ham-supporting relatives. “All my family are West Ham fans and I was there for three years when I was a youngster,” he said. “I was in a group with players like Paul Koncheski, who is at Charlton, Brighton’s Bobby Zamora and Joe Cole.

“It was going well, but then our coach changed and no one really enjoyed it after that. I then had spells at Arsenal and Manchester United before coming to Chelsea. I am expecting a lot of stick from my family and friends after scoring that goal.”

He added: “When I fell into the crowd behind the goal in the first half I am sure some of my family were sitting a few rows back. I could hear them giving me grief then.”
