Some eyebrow-raising footage of Russell Brand with ex-wife Katy Perry has resurfaced in the wake of her ex-husband’s guilty verdict in a rape trial.
The stand-up comic and actor, 51, was found guilty on one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault on Thursday (5 November) as his trial at Southwark Crown Court came to an end.
Two videos have been reshared after the verdict was announced. One, from 2010, shows Brand and Perry being asked by former ITV breakfast show GMTV what they thought of that year’s Academy Awards ceremony, while arriving at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party.
After Brand starts answering, Perry interrupts him, stating: “You didn’t watch it!” A surprised Brand then makes a joke, fabricating a fake memory from the ceremony, with the interviewer telling Perry: “You just put him in it right now.”
Brand, clearly unimpressed, bluntly replies: “I did watch the Oscars,” but Perry, ignoring him, tells the reporter: “I call him on his bulls***.” Moments later, when the reporter asks Perry who she was happy to see win, Brand holds up and taps a badge reading “Obey”. He shows it to Perry, who becomes silent, and Brand then proceeds to share his views on the evening.

While he provides a non-answer, the interviewer tries to involve Perry, asking: “Katy, how do you deal with this guy?” and Perry, looking visibly awkward, replies: “He’s actually hilarious.” Brand then proceeds to pull her away.
The strangeness of Brand’s behaviour in the video, as well as Perry’s reaction, has been highlighted, with many calling it “disturbing”.
Another video shows Perry telling fans at a concert at Blenheim Palace Festival in July 2025: “I hope my ex isn’t here. He should be in jail.”

Perry, who was married to Brand from October 2010 to December 2011, is yet to comment on the conviction. However, it has been reported by Mail on Sunday that the “Firework” singer is in “active discussions” to tell the truth about her “dark marriage” in a documentary series and book.
A source said: “Katy has received multiple offers over the years to tell her story, but would not consider anything until after the trial. She has a lot to say.
“At the moment, she’s considering a Netflix-type series and an autobiography. She and her team have been in active discussions. There is a lot about that marriage, which people don’t know. It was a very dark period in her life.”
The Independent has contacted Perry for comment.
Another clip, from Brand’s appearance on Channel 4’s Big Fat Quiz of the Year, has also been reshared on social media, and it shows the stand-up comedian and co-star Noel Fielding making jokes about rape, which were later described by fellow panellist Lily Allen as “really horrendous”.
The episode, which aired in 2007, saw host Jimmy Carr welcome Rob Brydon, David Mitchell, Jonathan Ross, Fielding and Brand onto the panel alongside singer Lily Allen, who was 21 at the time and the only woman on the show.
When Ross jokily expressed concern about Allen being sat near Brand and Fielding, he said: “I’m going to insist as a sort of uncle figure in Lily’s life that she moves over there because obviously that’s the sexless zone.” He then moved her closer to Brydon and Mitchell, adding: “And then, Lily might go home with her breasts still on.”

Fielding then replies: “How dare you? We’re not rapists,” with Carr asking him why he’s wearing a cape on the show if he’s not a rapist.
“It’s a Jack the Ripper cape. He wasn’t a rapist, he was just–” Fielding says, as Russell Brand adds: “A serial murderer. There is no direct corollary between capes and rape. It’s just a rhyme. Leave him alone.”
Brand continues: “What if, horror of horrors, he ain’t even done a rape. You could ruin his reputation. Have you done a rape?” Fielding replies: “Well, if I have, I’d be leaving the scene of the crime like this,” before placing his cape up to his face like Dracula.
Allen spoke about the uncomfortable moment in an interview 16 years later. “I was on a chat show with Russell Brand and Noel Fielding and Jonathan Ross. And there are comments, I think, about me being raped or something,” she told Grazia in 2023.
“And I laugh along with it. In retrospect, that’s really horrendous. It makes me uncomfortable, but I don’t think I felt that at the time, because it was the.”
Fielding has not been accused of any wrongdoing and was not involved in Brand’s trial and conviction in any way.
Following the court’s verdict on Thursday, Judge Mr Justice Bennathan told Brand that the charges meant he faced “a custodial sentence of some length” when he is sentenced on Monday.
He was denied bail and remanded in custody following the judgement, spending his first night in the cells last night.
Brand is under investigation for two more alleged rapes, including a 16-year-old schoolgirl, and police have warned that further victims could still come forward.
