CVS recalls eye drops sold nationwide amid safety fears

CVS is recalling certain lots of Clear Eyes Redness Relief Lubricant Eye Drops over concerns that the products may not be sterile.

The recall, initiated by Medtech, a CVS supplier, affects select 0.5-fluid-ounce bottles of the eye drops sold at CVS pharmacies. The company said it could not confirm the sterility of the affected products.

Contaminated eye drops can introduce bacteria or other harmful substances directly into the eye, potentially causing infections and other serious complications.

Customers who have the affected eye drops should stop using them and check the lot number printed on the bottle.

The recalled products have UPC 678112254156 and CVS SKU 318160. The recall covers specific lots with expiration dates ranging from July through November 2027.

The affected lot numbers are:

  • RL25G02, RL25G03 and RL25G04, expiring July 2027
  • RL25H02, RL25H03 and RL25H04, expiring August 2027
  • RL25K01, RL25K02, RL25K03 and RL25K04, expiring September 2027
  • RL25M01, RL25M02, RL25M03 and RL25M04, expiring October 2027
  • RL25N01, RL25N02 and RL25N04, expiring November 2027

Anyone with an affected bottle should stop using it and return it to the CVS pharmacy where it was purchased. Customers who have their receipt can receive a refund.

The recall was not listed on the FDA’s drug-recall announcement page, but CVS’ September 17 recall notice includes the full list of affected lots.

It is the latest recall involving Clear Eyes products. Prestige Consumer Healthcare recalled certain bottles of Clear Eyes Maximum Itchy Eye Relief in July over similar concerns about a lack of sterility assurance.

It was not immediately clear whether the two recalls are connected.
