Thomas Tuchel has got it absolutely spot on with Djed Spence at right back.
The Tottenham full back is hardly the perfect solution — he has endured a difficult campaign in a struggling side this season — but he is a natural in that position and, with Reece James unavailable, it represented the only sensible option.
The alternative would have been to shift Ezri Konsa across and bring John Stones into the back line — but that risked undermining the established partnership between Marc Guehi and Konsa.
The genuine shock for me was selecting Noni Madueke ahead of Bukayo Saka, which suggests to me that Tuchel harbours doubts over Saka’s full fitness.
Saka has been battling Achilles problems and we simply have not witnessed him at his peak. We caught a glimpse of his quality from the bench against Croatia.
Perhaps that remains the strategy once more….
Marcus Rashford is the standout choice on the left flank.
