Tom Hardy returning to MobLand despite on-set tensions after Helen Mirren shows support: report

Tom Hardy is reportedly returning to MobLand for season three, despite behind-the-scenes drama on the show.

The future of Paramount+’s hit crime series hung in the air after reports of tension between Hardy, 48, and the show’s writer, executive producer and showrunner Jez Butterworth during season two of the show, with several outlets reporting that he had been fired.

However, Deadline reported Tuesday that the British actor will return to the show full-time and continue to star alongside Helen Mirren and Pierce Brosnan.

Hardy reportedly worked out his issues with Butterworth during a recent meeting in London where they came to an understanding about the future of the show, the outlet reported.

It comes after Mirren recently showed her support for Hardy, declaring, “As long as what’s on the screen is fantastic, I’m totally chilled with whatever, however anyone gets there.”

Paramount+ did not immediately return The Independent’s request for comment on the news.

MobLand has not officially been renewed for a third season, but Deadline has reported that a writers room for future episodes had already opened ahead of the season two premiere.

Reports of tensions on set emerged last month with stories of Hardy being chronically late to shoots and complaining about the storylines in the show, which debuted in 2025 and follows two rival mob families as they battle to protect their own empires.

An unnamed source told The Hollywood Reporter that the Mad Max: Fury Road actor had “refused to come out of his trailer for hours at a time.”

“He kept the cast waiting, [which is] a power play,” the source told the outlet at the time. “Keeping Pierce Brosnan, Helen Mirren and others waiting is career suicide, I would wager.”

However, 80-year-old Mirren has seem unaffected by his alleged behavior. In May, she shared a picture of Hardy on Instagram and wrote, “Love you now and always, Helen.”

She then said at the Taormina Film Festival that she would work with Hardy again in a “heartbeat,” according to Deadline.

“Different actors have different processes – I’ve learned over the years that some people get things fast and other people took time,” she said. “I love Tom – I think he’s the most amazing actor. I’ve always loved him on screen.

Mirren added, “I think he’s absolutely remarkable. So my support of him is genuine and heartfelt.”

Despite initial reports claiming Hardy had been fired from the show, dropped from the show, a source close to production toldVariety in May: “Tom was not fired, the door is not closed for season three, and things are being worked through creatively.”
