Arsenal transfer timeline emerges after ‘intensive talks’ over club-record move

Fabio Vieira could be forced to wait until August to finalise his Arsenal departure, with the Gunners and Hamburg remaining poles apart in their assessment of the midfielder’s worth. The former Porto star would ideally like a move wrapped up ahead of pre-season, having been left to sweat until deadline day before joining the German club on loan last campaign. However, it’s claimed that Arsenal are seeking a fee that would represent a club-record move for Hamburg.

Vieira’s loan deal included purchase option of around £17million, but this isn’t expected to be triggered despite the Bundesliga outfit and the player both harbouring a desire to make the switch permanent. While Hamburg are hopeful of negotiating more favourable terms, Arsenal are aware of interest in Vieira from other quarters that they can use to their advantage.

According to football.london, director of football Claus Costa and head coach Merlin Polzin have held private talks with Vieira in a bid to convince him to remain with Hamburg. The German press describes these as ‘intensive talks’.

Hamburg will look to strike an agreement with Arsenal for under £8.7m, seeking to exploit the fact that Vieira’s contract at the Emirates Stadium does not expire until 2027. The north London club, meanwhile, would prefer a figure closer to £13m.

HSV’s record transfer stands at £12.18m, when they signed Filip Kostic from Stuttgart in 2016, meaning Vieira’s purchase option was always going to be a tall order.

Despite their efforts to win over the player, Hamburg will need to rely on Vieira being determined to return rather than pursue alternative options.

If not, the German club could find themselves losing out on a key target while Arsenal wait for the most favourable agreement.

Last month, Vieira stopped short of committing his future to the Volksparkstadion. He said: “I have to be open to everything. Let’s see what happens.”

Asked if he could imagine staying, he added: “I can’t say that yet. No matter what the future brings, I was very happy here and will be forever grateful to the HSV.

“The club did everything for me, the support was amazing. I feel the love of the fans and the club. They all love me.”

Vieira registered seven goals and five assists across 29 appearances as he contributed to Hamburg’s mid-table finish in 2025/26, despite beginning his loan spell with two red cards within his opening five matches.
