Lando Norris’ eye for a bargain saw him travel via ultra-low-cost airline easyJet despite the Formula One world champion’s mammoth net worth. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a stunning racing career since making his F1 debut in 2019 with 11 wins and 45 podiums to his name.
The reigning champion has almost built a colossal global fanbase thanks to his exploits with McLaren. Norris has 11.7million followers on Instagram and built up a net worth that amounts to a staggering £69million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Despite being the fifth-highest paid F1 driver with an annual salary of £25.9m, as per Spotrac, an opportunity to capture a good deal is something Norris has shown he is open to in the past.
During an interview midway through his McLaren debut season in 2019, Norris revealed he travelled by easyJet, a low-cost airline. Speaking to RaceFans, he said: “Just walking down the street, not many people would [recognise Norris]. If you see Lewis walking down the street, I don’t know if everyone would go ‘that’s definitely Lewis’, I think you’d be a bit ‘no, he wouldn’t be walking in Guildford’.
“I came on the plane here on EasyJet and people were like ‘you’re actually flying on an EasyJet?'” Estimated prices of Norris’ ticket back then would fall between £40 and £120 if he flew from the UK to either Spain, Italy or Central Europe while the value also depended on timing and the specific flight route.
Norris had a dream campaign last year that resulted in his maiden world championship but his fortunes haven’t been the same this season. He’s fresh off a frustrating showing at the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday where he was forced to retire.
However, Norris’ disappointment in Canada didn’t stop him from jetting off to the United States to watch the post-race celebrations of the Indy 500 that same day. The McLaren superstar had a nightmare race in Montreal after his team’s decision to start the Grand Prix on intermediate tyres backfired massively. The team scored no points after Oscar Piastri finished 11th with Norris’ retirement was a result of a gearbox issue.
The Briton didn’t wallow after the pitiful end to the weekend as he met up with former McLaren team-mate Daniel Ricciardo and IndyCar star Conor Daly to live it up in Indianapolis. The iconic race was won by Felix Rosenqvist who triumphed over David Malukas in the closest finish in Indy 500 history. The Swede claimed his maiden Indy 500 victory by just 0.0232 seconds.
