French Open match called off as star screams in agony at horror injury

Fran Jones’ French Open run came to an end at the hands of 27th seed Marie Bouzkova.

And the Brit – who won her first Grand Slam main draw match here earlier this week – said she was taking it as hard as a Wimbledon exit.

The world No.102 fought back from a set and a break down, and twice served for the second set, but suffered a 6-0 7-6 defeat.

Jones, 25, said: “I think as the match went on, I got better and better.

“I could see I was starting to get in her head a little bit.

“She was seeing a little bit less space on the court with my forehand.

“It’s a real shame I didn’t get over the line in the second set.

“But it only would have made it a set all, you’ve got to then close it out in the third set.”

World No.2 and reigning Australian Open champion Elena Rybakina suffered a huge upset at the hands of Yuliia Starodubtseva.

The Ukrainian world No.55 blew a 3-0 lead in the final set but won the match in a 10-point tiebreak 3-6 6-1 7-6.

Rybakina hit 71 unforced errors during the match and said: “I thought that I can raise the level, but actually today it was a very bad performance.”

But three-time former champion Novak Djokovic booked his place in the third round.

The Serbian superstar broke French hearts as he beat home hope Valentin Royer 6-3 6-2 6-7 6-3.

Jakub Mensik survived a brutal four-hour and 41-minute match in the heat, then dropped to the ground and couldn’t move for several minutes.

The Czech 26th seed started cramping at the end of the final-set tiebreak but still beat Mariano Navone 6-3 2-6 6-4 1-6 7-6.

Medics came to the court, and Mensik was finally able to walk away, but needed a wheelchair to get back to the locker room.

The 20-year-old later explained: “In the beginning of the fourth set, I was struggling to put electrolytes into my body and to drink, and it was causing the problems after.

“It was obviously during the heat. It’s insane to play in this weather.

“Even if it looked horrible at the end, after 30 minutes in the locker rooms, when I was out of the sun, I started to feel much better. I’m feeling pretty well.”

There were more distressing scenes as Hailey Baptiste went down injured while 4-5 down against Wang Xiyu on the same court a few hours later.

The 26th seed landed on her leg awkwardly and immediately dropped to the floor, screaming in pain.

It comes just weeks after Baptiste stunned world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka at the Madrid Open.
