Katier Boulter avoided an upset at the French Open as she overcame teenage wildcard Akasha Urhobo in a match that saw a combined 93 unforced errors.
Experience beat youth as the British No.2 claimed a 6-4 4-6 6-4 victory over the world No.185, who was making her Grand Slam debut.
They traded breaks early on and Boulter broke in a gruelling seven-minute game to take the opening set.
But the world No. 71 struggled in the second and hit back-to-back double faults to get broken.
Boulter, 29, managed to break back in a nine-minute game, and then hit four consecutive unforced errors to get broken again.
The Leicester-born ace couldn’t convert two break points as Urhobo served for the set.
She pounced first in the decider when Urhobo sent a dropshot into the net.
But the rollercoaster continued, and Boulter was broken when serving for the match.
After two hours and 20 minutes, the world No.71 finally claimed victory when the wildcard sent a forehand long.
Boulter is through to the second round of the French Open for just the second time in her career, and faces in-form 28th seed Anastasia Potapova.
Urhobo had been playing her first Grand Slam match and got a wildcard as part of an agreement between the French and US tennis federations.
The world No.185 won more ranking points than any other American player ranked outside the top 100 in a five-week span leading up to May, effectively winning the wildcard.
