Manchester United academy players have reacted to Rhys Bennett’s goodbye message following his 16-year spell at the club, with the defender expressing his readiness to progress after his exit. Bennett has signed for League Two outfit Fleetwood Town, having spent last season on loan at their Highbury ground.
The 22-year-old featured 38 times during two separate loan periods at Fleetwood last term, finding the net twice. He also completed a six-month temporary move to Stockport County in 2024. Bennett remarked after finalising his switch to Fleetwood: “I spent 16 years there, and they helped me every step of the way. I’m really thankful to everyone for helping me grow, on and off the pitch.”
The message attracted replies from numerous academy prospects, with Chido Obi commenting: “All the best my guy.”
Ex-Reds academy player Joe Hugill posted: “Bensonnn what a guy, all the best brother,” whilst Ethan Wheatley responded: “What a guy, all the best brother.”
Shea Lacey continued: “My brother, all the best benno,” while Finley McAllister penned: “Love ya son! Go get em kid.”
Daniel Gore commented: “All the best brother. Go show em!!”
Bennett had been at the Premier League club since he was 10 years old, progressing through the academy ranks. He captained the youth side that lifted the FA Cup in 2022, netting against Nottingham Forest in the final.
United have also announced the exits of Joe Hugill and Toby Collyer this week.
