Michael Carrick shouldn’t give Manchester United the job permanently despite a sensational start to his caretaker stint – because he won’t win them Premier League titles. That’s the brutal verdict of United legend Roy Keane who has dismissed Carrick’s chances of taking the role on a full-time basis this summer following a superb 3-2 win over Arsenal. Carrick has won two games from two against title rivals Manchester City and Arsenal with United scoring five goals across those 180 minutes, though they could have netted seven or eight.
Carrick refused to discuss the possibility of replacing Ruben Amorim on a permanent basis after the win at the Emirates. And Keane is eager for his old club to appoint a head coach capable of taking them to a first Premier League title since 2013. He said on Sky Sports: “I think if United win every game from now until the end of the season, I still wouldn’t be giving him the job. I just think they need a bigger, more experienced manager. Simple as that.
“Carrick could win every game, timing coming into the job was fantastic for him. He said there he was enjoying it but you enjoy management when you’re winning football matches, of course. I think the size of the club and the challenges they face over the next few years, Jamie Carragher mentioned it the last few weeks – you want a manager you feel will come in and get Man United winning league titles.
“Are we all going to sit here and say Michael Carrick can get Man United winning league titles? It’s still not enough for me. If you think on the back of two wins he warrants the job, then that’s your opinion. I’m entitled to mine and I don’t think he’s the man to get Man United back to winning league titles.”
Earlier in the same broadcast after United’s victory in the English capital, Keane said when Micah Richards asked if Carrick is the right man to lead United going forward: “The job? No, you’re being silly now. You serious?
“He’s had two great performances, but anybody can win two games. It’s what he does at the end of the season. Even if they do secure fourth place, I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the man for the job.

“Absolutely not, I still think they need a bigger and better manager, but he’s got the opportunity, what a chance for him and, you know what, he’s taken it, so, fair play to him.”
Regardless of his take on Carrick’s future, Keane believes United will only gain confidence from beating Arsenal. He said: “It will give them belief of getting into that top four. This is a brilliant goal, by the way. Lovely play by Bruno [Fernandes] and [Kobbie] Mainoo, and that strike [from Matheus Cunha], what a strike.
“Look at Bruno here, does really well, little give and go, and Cunha, as soon as it leaves his foot… and the keeper, who is a very, very good keeper. They definitely played with a bit more freedom going forward, they came to win the game.
“They weren’t sitting at the back, you’d think United were thinking ‘We’ll take the draw’ at 2-2, and we’d still be sitting here going, ‘Great result for United!’
“But to get that momentum and score a brilliant goal from someone off the bench, just like they did last week shows a good attitude, a good mindset, they’ll be growing in confidence and the attacking players they are playing with a lot more freedom.”
