Europa League match delayed as riot police storm crowd and 1,400 fans sent home

The Europa League fixture between FC Utrecht and KRC Genk was thrown into chaos after riot police were compelled to intervene in the away section. The match, originally set to begin at 8pm UK time, faced immediate postponement due to unspecified security concerns involving the visiting supporters.

According to Dutch publication AD, the disruption began when a contingent of Genk supporters circumvented rigorous security protocols, declining to present identification or submit to searches.

A mayoral spokesman has subsequently verified that a substantial number of ticketless Genk fans breached stadium security and gained entry to the away end without undergoing proper checks.

While the cities are in different countries, they are just 97 miles away from each other, making the fixture one of the most eagerly-anticipated away trips for Genk supporters.

Following an emergency security consultation, it has been reported that the entire allocation of 1,400 ticketed Genk fans were ejected from the stadium.

The fixture eventually commenced at 8.50pm UK time, nearly an hour later than billed.

Addressing the postponement, FC Utrecht posted on their X account: “The kick-off of FC Utrecht – KRC Genk has been delayed due to a situation at the away section. An update will follow as soon as more information is available.”

Videos and images on social media appeared to show masked Genk supporters clashing with riot police before they were ejected from the stadium.

Some fans were reportedly armed with sticks and batons, leading to a fierce response from local police.

Utrecht are already out of the Europa League and named a weakened side for the clash.

Genk, however, went into the game knowing that victory would secure their progression into the knockout stages.

They took the lead in the second half, with Zakaria El Ouahdi putting the Belgian side ahead in the 54th minute.
