Celtic facing Arne Engels transfer raid as Martin O’Neill called for meeting

RB Leipzig are reportedly eyeing a move for Celtic midfielder Arne Engels this transfer window. The Belgian international, who joined the Scottish side from Bundesliga outfit FC Augsburg for a record-breaking £11million in August 2024, has had a mixed reception at Parkhead despite contributing 14 goals and 18 assists in 85 appearances across all competitions.

Now, it seems Leipzig – who were bested by Celtic in last season’s Champions League – are keen to lure him back to Germany. Sky Germany suggests that Engels, along with AC Milan’s Ardon Jashari, are on Leipzig’s radar if they fail to secure Borussia Mochengladbach’s Rocco Reitz.

This comes as Leipzig look to strengthen their midfield following rumours of a mutual contract termination with Austrian international Xaver Schlager. With just a fortnight left in the January transfer window, Celtic’s interim boss Martin O’Neill is aware that new signings could be crucial to their Premiership title defence.

O’Neill is set for a pivotal transfer meeting with the Celtic board at Lennoxtown as he seeks to intensify their recruitment efforts.

The Hoops are in dire need of bolstering their attacking options and have been linked with numerous players. A loan move for Lorient’s Mohamed Bamba is reportedly on the cards, but it seems they’ve missed out on Franko Kovacevic, who looks set to join Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros.

Celtic did express interest in seasoned West Ham striker Callum Wilson, but after scoring a crucial goal against local rivals Tottenham, the England international appears likely to stay in East London for the rest of the season.

A potential deal for Evan Ferguson has also hit a snag, as Roma have shown renewed faith in the struggling forward amid rumours that his loan from Brighton could be terminated early.
