Xavi has already sent Chelsea message about manager’s job – ‘I’d love to’

When pressed to elaborate, Maresca reiterated: “Worst 48 hours since I joined the club because people didn’t support me and the team.”

As the Blues commence their search for fresh leadership, Barcelona legend Xavi remains available, having not taken up a position since departing the Camp Nou in May 2024.

The celebrated former midfielder has made clear that a move to English football would appeal to him. “Of course? Where, I don’t know,” the Spaniard told The Athletic when questioned about his return to management earlier this year.

‘There’s no hurry for me, but I’d like a good project. Like, ‘You have four years to work and make a project.

‘ I’d love to work in the Premier League because I love the passion there. In Spain, it’s too much about the result.

“Or a national team, that would appeal. When I dreamed about being a coach, I dreamed about being in a World Cup or European Championship.”

Whether a new manager will be appointed in time for Chelsea‘s fixture against Manchester City on Sunday remains uncertain.

Whilst Xavi is presently without a club and amongst the five leading contenders to succeed Maresca, Liam Rosenior appears to be the favourite for the position. Rosenior currently manages Strasbourg, a club owned by Chelsea’s parent company, and is now regarded as the most likely appointment.

The club’s official statement confirming Maresca’s exit read: “Chelsea Football Club and Head Coach Enzo Maresca have parted company. During his time at the Club, Enzo led the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.

“Those achievements will remain an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contributions to the Club. With key objectives still to play for across four competitions including qualification for Champions League football, Enzo and the Club believe a change gives the team the best chance of getting the season back on track. We wish Enzo well for the future.”
