Liverpool’s January transfer activities are as crucial as the potential departures from Anfield this month. Currently in fourth place after a rocky start to the season, the Reds have found stability under Arne Slot. After a public disagreement with Mohamed Salah in November, the Dutch head coach is now focusing on player transfers at Anfield. The club made significant investments in the summer, spending a total of £415million to bolster the squad.
Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, Giovanni Leoni and Alexander Isak were among the high-profile arrivals in Merseyside. Although January is traditionally a challenging period for Premier League clubs to attract talent, Slot will be hoping to use his budget to spur a late push for trophies in 2026. Express Sport has compiled a list of potential targets for Slot, as well as players who might be bidding farewell to Anfield.
Marc Guehi – Crystal Palace
Marc Guehi has been linked with Liverpool for some time. The England international was poised to join the Reds for £35m last summer, but Crystal Palace pulled out of the deal at the eleventh hour.
As it stands, Guehi is set to leave Palace as a free agent in the summer, which could allow Liverpool to secure his services at that time. However, Newcastle showed interest in the 25-year-old in 2024, having three bids turned down at the time.
Interest from overseas clubs, such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Inter, could prompt Liverpool to expedite a deal for the star.
However, Palace are almost certain to keep hold of the defender during this transfer window. It’s understood that he is crucial to manager Olivier Glasner’s plans for the second half of the season.
Despite this, Slot might still be tempted to make another offer for the defender, but it may be wiser for the Reds to bide their time.
Antoine Semenyo – Bournemouth
Antoine Semenyo has been linked with almost every club in England following an impressive start to the 2025/26 season. The Ghanaian international has netted nine goals and provided three assists in 17 matches for Bournemouth so far and has been strongly linked with Manchester City.
However, his previous connection with Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes could prove beneficial for the Reds.
Hughes was the technical director at Bournemouth and played a significant role in the recruitment team when Semenyo was signed from Bristol City in 2023 for £10m.
This connection could be pivotal in Liverpool outpacing City in the race for the 25-year-old’s signature. However, it’s expected that Semenyo will join Pep Guardiola‘s side in January, with the £65m release clause only active until January 10.
Yan Diomande – RB Leipzig
In December 2025, Sky Sports Switzerland claimed Liverpool had made “very advanced” contact with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande.
The 19-year-old has made a significant impact for the Bundesliga outfit since his summer arrival, netting seven goals and providing four assists. He is currently representing the Ivory Coast at AFCON.
Spurs are also reportedly monitoring the teenager, though no formal club-to-club discussions have taken place with any potential buyers.
The future of Salah has dominated headlines in recent months following his very public dispute with Slot. The Anfield icon claimed the club was “throwing him under the bus” after being dropped from the starting line-up for three successive matches.
He was subsequently omitted from the Champions League encounter at Inter before returning to the squad against Brighton after constructive talks with Slot.
Whilst the Liverpool boss insists he has “moved on” from the controversy, speculation continues to swirl regarding a possible departure.
Saudi Arabian outfits were placed on red alert following this clash, with several clubs maintaining their interest in acquiring his services. Al Ittihad tabled a £150m offer for the Egyptian player in 2023, which was ultimately rejected.
Nevertheless, with supporter tensions still simmering, the Champions League victor could pursue an exit before the end of the campaign.
Trey Nyoni
The 18-year-old has made limited appearances for the Reds this season, featuring in pre-season and on the bench in recent weeks.
Nyoni came on during the closing stages against Tottenham in December, giving him a taste of this year’s Premier League before the festive period concluded.
He also started both of Liverpool’s EFL Cup fixtures, completing 90 minutes against Southampton and Crystal Palace. However, Slot may consider sending the young midfielder out on loan to gain the vital experience needed to compete at the top level.
Speaking after giving Nyoni his first senior start in the 2024/25 campaign, Slot said: “This club is known for this. These players train with us on a daily basis and it is nice to see they showed they can play at this level. “Now the next step is to be capable of playing [regularly] for Liverpool.”
Rhys Williams
Rhys Williams made his senior debut for Liverpool in 2020 and went on to feature 19 times for Jurgen Klopp‘s side during that campaign alone.
However, the defender has barely featured since and has been sent out on loan six times over the past five years.
The 24-year-old has been restricted to EFL Trophy appearances this term and was named on the bench for the Reds’ third-round tie with Southampton in the Carabao Cup.
Another loan spell may be required for the centre-back to secure crucial playing time, but his numerous temporary moves in recent years may prompt Slot to end his Liverpool career for potential success at another club.
