Coco Gauff became the eighth American player to reach the fourth round at the French Open – the most for 40 years.

Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova and Jimmy Connors were among the US stars the last time the feat was achieved in 1985.

This year the 2023 US Open champion Gauff has been joined by world No.3 Jessica Pegula, No.7 Madison Keys, No.16 Amanda Anisimova and unseeded Hailey Baptiste. For the men there are No.12 Tommy Paul, No.13 Ben Shelton and NO.16 Frances Tiafoe.

US Open semi-finalist Pegula, who will next face French wildcard Lois Boisson, said: “It’s exciting to see. Obviously you want to see your fellow countrymen do well on the other side, and I’m always actually keeping up with them, you know, quite a lot. Nice. Cool. I hope they keep it going.

Keys, who won the Australian Open in January, saved three match points while down 5-4 in the final set and came back to beat 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. She will now play world No.70 Baptiste.

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva, who reached the semi-finals last year, returned to the second week with a 6-3 6-1 win over No. 32 seed Yulia Putintseva. She won nine of the last 10 games.

“I’m happy with my level and super happy to be back to the fourth round,” said Andreeva.
