The new kit for England men’s football team has sparked outrage due to the St George’s Cross on the back of the collar being changed from all-red to a multicoloured version that features purple, blue and pink stripes. Manufacturers Nike said it was “a playful update” in order to “unite and inspire”.
The jersey is due to be worn by the Three Lions for the first time this Saturday against Brazil at Wembley. It has been designed for the upcoming major tournament Euro 2024 when Gareth Southgate will look to lead the country’s team to their first trophy since 1966.
But traditionalists have slammed the kit which Nike say was constructed with the purpose of “celebrating football heroes of the past with a modern twist”. Nigel Farage told GB News: “It bears no relationship to the St George’s Cross whatsoever.
“If the England football team think that’s acceptable, well, why on earth would you be apologetic about Englishness if you’re going to play for England in the European football finals? I think it’s an absolute joke.”
While Reform UK MP Lee Anderson told the Daily Express: “The left have a nerve to ask me why I want my country back.
“This virtue signalling, namby-pamby, pearl-clutching woke nonsense must stop. Any more of this and I’ll be on the first flight to Rwanda.”
