Golden Globes 2024 – live: How to watch as stars including Taylor Swift get ready to hit the red carpet

Golden Globes host Jo Koy is all smiles rolling out red carpet ahead of show

The Golden Globes are back with a blowout, televised ceremony on Sunday (7 January).

The annual, Beverly Hills-based awards show has been obscured in recent years after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation revealed that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the awards’ voting body) did not have a single Black member.

However, this year, the Globes are back in their usual Sunday slot on CBS and hoping to regain viewers. The starry ceremony will be broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel and is hosted by comedian Jo Koy.

On Friday, the Globes announced its full roster of awards presenters, which includes Dua Lipa, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Elizabeth Banks, Jared Leto, Jodie Foster and more.

Films in contention for trophies at the 2024 ceremony include Barbie, which leads the pack with eight nominations followed by Oppenheimer (eight), Killers of the Flower Moon and Poor Things (seven each).

Stars including Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone and Cillian Murphy are expected to arrive on the catwalk from 2pm Pacific Time (10pm GMT). The ceremony will then get underway at 5pm PT (1am GMT).

Why were the 2022 Golden Globes boycotted by major stars?

Up until 2023, the Golden Globe Awards were run by a parent organisation called the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).

However, in 2021 a Los Angeles Times exposé accused the HFPA of a lack of diversity in its voting membership as well as “ethical lapses” in its business conduct. At the time, the organisation did not have a single Black member.

It was accused of a “culture of corruption”, where companies were allegedly able to buy nominations or wins.

As a result, more than 100 public relations firms announced they would no longer work with the Globes, and stars such as Tom Cruise and Scarlett Johansson condemned the HFPA. Cruise handed back his three trophies and Johannsson urged a boycott and recalled facing “sexist questions and remarks by certain HFPA members that bordered on sexual harassment”.

The broadcast for 2022 was cancelled and the awards went ahead without any big stars in attendance to present or collect the prizes.

In June 2023, California’s attorney general approved a plan to dissolve the Hollywood Foreign Press Association entirely – a radical move which many hope is a good indicator for the future of diversity and fairness conversations in entertainment going forward.

Which films are nominated for the Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award?

Admittedly, this category has its critics.

The Independent’s Adam White wrote in his piece on Golden Globes predictions: “First of all: haha. The introduction of a category expressly designed to reward movies for making a ton of money is one of the lamer decisions by the Globes in recent years. And there have been a lot of lame decisions!”

Ouch. Still, someone has to take home the statuette for money made in cinemas! Here’s the rundown of nominees:

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

The Super Mario Bros Movie

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour
