Lewis Hamilton will be hoping to secure his first F1 victory in 686 days tonight by winning the United States Grand Prix from third on the grid. The Mercedes ace will have the added benefit of starting ahead of George Russell and Max Verstappen, who will line up in fifth and sixth respectively.
Charles Leclerc will start on pole after edging out Lando Norris in Friday’s qualifying session, with the McLaren driver joining him on the front row of the grid. Hamilton will certainly be hoping to pull ahead of both drivers when the five red lights go out, but he has already insisted that Verstappen will be the man to beat despite starting from further back than he is used to.
“Ultimately I think he will be breathing down our necks before too long with the pace that he had today, but I think it’ll open up for a good fight with Charles and Lando,” said Hamilton after Saturday’s sprint.
“We are all quite similar in pace so hopefully we can get to have a good battle tomorrow and if we can all keep Max behind tomorrow that’ll be awesome. But, if not, no worries.”
