t’s the collaboration you didn’t know you needed – for the film you never knew you wanted.
Upcoming film Minions: The Rise of Gru, out July 1, will see the tiny yellow mischief-makers take to the screen once more, with a soundtrack that sounds nothing short of perfection.
To cap it off, Tame Impala has just released a new song with the legendary Diana Ross. Yes, you read that right.
It is also the result of months of speculation about a potential collaboration. Though the funky-sounding collab was rumoured to appear on Ross’s 2021 album Thank You, it has instead been released as a brand-new single.
And get excited, because this is just the first in what promises to be some top-tier covers for the film’s soundtrack.
To start with, St Vincent will be tackling Lipps Inc’s Funkytown, Phoebe Bridgers will be singing the Carpenters’ Goodbye to Love, and Caroline Polachek will be covering Nancy Sinatra’s Bang Bang.
That’s not all though: Brittany Howard will be singing Earth, Wind and Fire’s Shining Star alongside original bandmember Verdine White, while Kali Uchis will be singing bossa nova classic Desafinado.
In addition, Weyes Blood, Thundercat and Tierra Whack are on the album – as well as RZA, who is contributing an original song, Kung Fu Suite.
And who could forget the minions themselves, singing along to Simon and Garfunkel’s Cecilia?
All in all, the soundtrack is indecently good – and it’s also being produced by Taylor Swift and Lorde favourite, Jack Antonoff.
If you can’t wait to get your hands on a copy of the album (and really, who could blame you?), it’s out digitally and on vinyl, cassette and CD from July 1, the same day the movie launches.
