Jade Country looks ripe for picking in the twelve-runner Median Auction Maiden Stakes over seven furlongs of Southwell tapeta this afternoon under Georgia Dobie, having her first ride of the year aboard Eve Johnson Houghton’s charge.
This combination enjoyed tremendous success last year, Georgia reduced her apprentice claim from 7lbs and Eve saddled Chipotle to win several high-profile juvenile races including the ‘Windsor Castle’ at Royal Ascot and Redcar Trophy which is worth a colossal amount of money. Those races collectively involved beating forty rivals!
As a consequence her yard has been blessed with several quality additions and you can bet Eve will be determined to build on recent triumphs under the ever-watchful eye of famous father Fulke, one of the very best and consistent trainers in the 1970/80’s with great triumphs for Charles Englehard and ably assisted by Lester Piggott. Fantastic era.
75-rated Griffin Park and Volos (73) are bound to be ‘on the premises’ and one or two others have ‘quiet’ debut form but Jade Country comes out best and makes for a solid each-way bet worth playing into a trixie with Paul Nicholls-trained Sabrina in a shallow-looking eight-runner Novices’ Hurdle over two and a half miles of ‘good to soft’ Wincanton should represent a perfect NH surface, unwatered!
That wasn’t the case at Newcastle two days ago when ‘good’ ground rode very soft because of watering, in January!
You couldn’t make it up but ‘clerks’ of several courses recently have been guilty of misrepresentation and should be fined heavily by the BHA.
Sabrina, an Ascot ‘bumper’ winner, shaped well over hurdles when sixth (of 15!) at Ludlow six weeks ago, jumping well throughout.
Following on will be division one of a Novices’ Hurdle over two miles and a tremendous opportunity for penalised Honneur D”Ajonc to supplement recent, unchallenged gains in a similar race at Exeter; don’t oppose.
Switching back to the Nottinghamshire all-weather track you may recall I wrote about the ‘new’ surface being somewhat unsatisfactory and weird; lo and behold tapeta ‘inventor’ Michzel Dickinson (currently in England) stated categorically work needs to be done in the next few weeks which should bring it up to scratch.
I’m ‘on the case’ all the time readers!
Selections, Southwell, 1.30 Jade Country (e.w); Wincanton, 1.40 Sabrina (e.w); 3.10 Honneur D’Ajonc.
