MANCHESTER UNITED could turn to former captain Steve Bruce as interim manager at Old Trafford.

The axed Newcastle boss is reported to be ‘very keen’ on taking on the job.

Bruce, 60, reckons he can ‘stabilise the dressing room’ at Old Trafford, according to The Athletic.

The ex-centre-back played over 300 times for Manchester United between 1987 and 1996.

And now the T20 Cricket World Cup – where Bruce was spotted cheering on England – has finished, he is eager to get back into management.

It would be a risk appointing a former player, but unlike Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Bruce boasts vast experience in management.

The ex-Sunderland and Aston Villa boss also knows the ins-and-outs of the club following his decade-long spell in Manchester as a player.

He is a surprise potential candidate for the interim role before a long-term successor is appointed after Solskjaer was sacked.

Bruce was axed by Newcastle’s mega-rich Saudi owners last month without winning a game with the Magpies this season.

But now he believes he can steady the ship back at his old stomping ground.

Lokomotiv Moscow Head of Sports and Development Ralf Rangnick, 63, has also been linked with the interim position.

Brendan Rodgers though is United’s No1 long-term target for the role.

SunSport exclusively revealed the Leicester boss has been contacted by Old Trafford chiefs regarding the role.

However he slammed speculation linking him to Manchester United as ‘really disrespectful’.

Elsewhere Zinedine Zidane, Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag have also been tipped to take up the reigns at the Prem giants.

Ten Hag though has labelled reports linking him to Old Trafford as ‘weird’.

Meanwhile Zidane could be stopped from moving to Manchester by his dancer wife Vernonique.

She is thought to want her hubby to take a longer break from the game after leaving Real Madrid in the summer.

Pochettino though is reportedly ready to answer the call should United come knocking.
