AWR is back and my focus is fixed firmly on an eight-race floodlit Wolverhampton tapeta programme which features two divisions of the Novice Stakes over an extended one mile; fancies are Symbol Of Light and Yantarni but not necessarily my selections!
As ever I’m keen on exploiting value of each-way doubles and both State Legend/Asean Legend seem certain to fill one of three places respectively judged on the time-handicap which has profited superbly in 2021 by ‘specialising’ on two-year-olds, a fascinating, consistent age group from the time one hit the racecourse decades ago.
Symbol Of Light comes out clear ‘best-in’ for the first leg but my modus operandi is all about realistic assessment and twice-raced State Legend improved his mark when fourth (of 8!), beaten three lengths over course and distance nine weeks ago; this James Ferguson-trained Churchill colt had no chance from the moment he was loaded into the widest draw!
‘You can’t beat the draw’, especially around Dunstall Park which is dominated by a long left-handed bend and of course State Legend raced wide throughout; quite a feat to get so close and I’ll be gobsmacked if he isn’t ‘on the premises’ under Jack Mitchell and challenging Symbol Of Light down the short straight.
Ferguson acquired State Of Legend from trainer Hugo Palmer who introduced him at Ascot in July; same ownership!
Charlie Appleby’s Yantarni, Godolphin-owned stable companion of Symbol Of Light, is likely favourite for division two but Asean Legend is another booked for the frame; second on debut at Haydock eight weeks back reads strong form, trained by Palmer for whom ex-jockeys, twins Michael and Richard Hills, ride out regularly.
When playing each-way doubles it always pays when the second selection is shorter because on Betfair there is a ‘cash out’ facility or a chance to ‘lay’ the win and profit from placings. Often CO is useful when opposing odds-on favourites in the Premier Soccer League. This is my business readers, investing, no ‘gambling’ involved!
Earlier thrice-raced Richard Hughes-trained Amirat Alward looks solid for a Maiden Stakes over six furlongs of Lingfield polytrack; Ryan Moore is booked for the progressive Acclamation filly and so look no further for the winner.
Think an each-way ‘trixie’ is also the play.
