Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Quantum Communications Systems

The role

Applications welcome from talented individuals with experience in photonics, and quantum optics to help in the development of quantum communication and quantum key distribution (QKD) technologies. Key project areas will be designing, building and testing both chip scale and bulk optics QKD systems and demonstrating them on quantum networks. This opportunity is suitable for both recently qualified post-doctoral researchers and applicants that are more experienced.

You will join the team and work towards building large scale quantum networks, long distance quantum communication (via optical fibre, free space and satellite), novel (MDI, floodlight) QKD, quantum repeaters and other quantum information protocols.

What will you be doing?

As a member of the Quantum Engineering Technologies Labs (QET Labs) you will contribute to the team at Bristol working on quantum communications technologies. This project feeds into the £24M EPSRC-funded Quantum Technologies Hub in Quantum Communications, and as a result, you will have the opportunity to work with theoretical and experimental researchers within the university, as well as external collaborators and industrial partners.

Experience in the following areas are welcome: photonics, free space optics or other quantum technologies, packaging photonic chips, fibre optics, entanglement sources, DV/CV QKD, optical communication, electronics, programming, cyber security and theoretical work.

This position is full-time (flexible working options are considered) and is open ended to 31st March 2023 with plans for extension subject to future funding. QET Labs is committed to helping researchers become independent academics and have extensive experience in aiding PDRAs with fellowship applications.

Appointment will be made at Grade I (Pathway 2a) or Grade J (Pathway 2b) depending on experience.
