Open Rank – Lecturer to Professor (E&R) in Medical Mycology

The MRC Centre for Medical Mycology at the University of Exeter seeks to appoint to two open rank posts, in the areas of antifungal resistance and in coinfections, to further strengthen an integrated team of exceptional scientists and clinicians from across multiple disciplines to conduct world-leading research aimed at tackling a major global threat to human health.

The MRC CMM is a world-leading research centre that is helping to tackle the global threat to human health caused by fungal diseases. Fungal infections now kill more people worldwide than malaria and similar numbers to tuberculosis. The MRC CMM is one of the most ambitious strategic investments in medical mycology and integrates researchers from multiple fields of expertise to increase our understanding of fungal pathogens and cognate immune defences, and to identify new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat fungal diseases. A major activity of the Centre is to increase capacity in fundamental and clinical research in medical mycology through research and training programmes for medical and biosciences students, clinicians and early career researchers. The Centre has established a satellite research and training Unit in Cape Town and is in the process of establishing similar Units in South America and in Asia. The MRC CMM also has numerous strategic interactions with other national and international groups and actively promotes the public engagement and understanding of our science.

About you

 For a Lecturer post you will have:

  • A strong and demonstrable interest in Medical Mycology that falls broadly in the research areas of antifungal drug resistance or fungal co-infections.
  • A PhD or equivalent
  • An independent, active research programme in a relevant field of research that has the potential to become internationally leading
  • Evidence of attracting research funding, or demonstrate a clear potential to attract such funding
  • A strong potential for research leadership
  • Enthusiasm and/or experience for delivering high quality undergraduate programmes

For a Senior Lecturer post, in addition to the above, you will have:

  • An internationally recognised research programme
  • A strong track record in refereed publications and success in significant grant capture
  • Clear evidence of research leadership
  • Relationships with external organisations and funders/ and knowledge and experience of key sectors or business challenges

For an Associate Professor or Professorial post you will:

  • Be a leading authority in academic specialism with a strong international reputation, as evidenced by international quality research publications, a strong track record of sustained research funding as principal investigator and PhD supervision, as well as other esteem indicators
  • Have experience of making a significant contribution to the development and clarification of research strategy for your subject area
  • Contribute to our educational programmes and to the overall student experience.
  • Be a leading international figure with the ability to attract world-class individuals to your research group and our Centre
