Industrial Research Assistant/Associate/Fellow (Impact Lab) (ERDF)

These full-time posts are available immediately on a fixed term basis until 30th June 2022.  The roles are funded through the European Regional Development Fund and form part of the European Strategic Investment Framework for Heart of the South West.

Summary of the role/position

We are looking for a number of innovative researchers to use their expertise to support the development of new ideas in data science and AI. This is an exciting opportunity to help protect the future of our environment and help businesses grow using data intensive methods.

You will be part of a highly-skilled team working together to turn research into reality through idea development and delivery of projects for clients. Projects will include: supporting small and medium sized businesses that have an innovative idea but don’t have the expertise to execute it alone; working with Impact Lab partners like the Met Office and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory; and working with academics to commercialise existing scientific research. The work will be highly varied, with the chance to learn new skills, as well as sharing your specialist knowledge with others. 

This is a unique opportunity which will expand your research experience while also developing your understanding of commercial business. You should be adept at explaining complex ideas in simple language, and understand how to build robust, sustainable software, suitable for the commercial market.

Successful applicants will support the work of Prof Richard Everson and work as part of a new Exeter Institute for Data Science and AI, an inter-disciplinary centre bringing together researchers working on all aspects of data science.

Key Responsibilities will include:

  • supporting small and medium sized businesses that have an innovative idea but don’t have the expertise to execute it alone
  • working with one or more of the Impact Lab partners like the Met Office and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory
  • working with academics to commercialise existing scientific research
  • explaining complex ideas in simple language, and understand how to build robust, sustainable software, suitable for the commercial market

You will:

  • for the Assistant and Associate roles, possess a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant area, including data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics or other highly numerate subject
  • for the Research Fellow roles, possess a relevant PhD or equivalent level of industry experience
  • be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of data science
  • be able to write software to implement data science concepts
  • able to communicate complex information orally
