We’re looking for a brilliant polymer chemist to help pioneer the development of new bioplastics in a collaborative project between the University of Bath and the sustainable biotech start-up Kelpi. We are looking for an experienced polymer chemist who combines scientific expertise and entrepreneurial vision to keep Kelpi at the forefront of a fast-moving sector, including being ready to identify and seize opportunities and is excited by working in sustainable technology development.
You will join a dynamic team of researchers and entrepreneurs, based at the University as well as the wider city. As part of this team you will play a pivotal role producing bioplastic packaging that is both marine-safe and home-compostable, as part of a wider biorefinery set-up being developed alongside. To achieve this you will synthesise a range of seaweed based composite films, using Kelpi’s proprietary methodology, and test the films for their main physical and polymer properties.
As such you’ll play a key role at the heart of the business, driving the research and development forward under the leadership of Professor Chris Chuck. You’ll benefit from working in a dynamic multidisciplinary team based at the Department of Chemical Engineering on the main University of Bath campus. The Department of Chemical Engineering is a top 10 department nationally, which specializes in cutting edge sustainable technology development, including the development and testing of novel biopolymers.
Kelpi is a highly innovative biotech start-up, pioneering world-class work in producing novel polymers from seaweed based in the beautiful city of Bath but with investors and networks across the world. It hosts a dynamic team, proud of their culture of innovation, open discussion and focused outputs allowing it to quickly move from ideas to prototypes to solutions. It is an ambitious and driven company that embraces agile working, believes in open discussion and diverse thinking. As such this role combines the extensive facilities of a top ten UK research department with the entrepreneurial drive of a biotech start-up working in an exciting field.
This role is fixed term for an expected duration of 6 months.
For informal enquiries please contact Professor Chris Chuck via email [email protected]
